Background
Karlstad Business School, inaugurated in 2009, comprises the disciplines of working life science, business administration, information systems, law, economics and statistics. Courses and programs are offered at all higher education levels supported by strong research activities in the disciplines as well as in multidisciplinary research groups such as the prominent Service Research Center, CTF (www.ctf.kau.se). There is a wide network of contacts, nationally and internationally, providing excellent opportunities for new research projects and contract projects. Business administration offers courses linked to three degree programs: MSc in Business and Economics, and Bachelor programs in Real Estate Management and International Business.
A number of Master programs and doctoral studies programs are also offered. Currently, around 1 000 students are studying business and economics at different levels. In addition, Karlstad Business School offers courses and programs in subjects related to business administration, such as the recently launched law program.
The appointment as professor in marketing is linked to CTF, Service Research Center, which is one of leading research centers in the world with a focus on service. Over 70 researchers and doctoral students pursue research in psychology, business administration, information systems, working life science, sociology and sociology of religion. CTF is known for its extensive collaboration with industry and public sector organizations, aiming to address challenges in both private and public sectors. CTF is one of two excellent research groups at the university.
Duties
The professorship is in business administration at Karlstad University, but is linked to ongoing research at CTF. At least 50% of duties involve research financed by one of the presently externally funded projects at CTF – to be decided on the basis of the successful candidate’s research profile. The appointed professor is expected to take a leading position in these projects, to supervise doctoral students and guide postdoc researchers. Publications must aspire towards excellence, which in this context means publishing in journals corresponding to levels three or four according to the ABS list. The goal is that research should contribute relevant knowledge to academia as well as to society and organizations. Beyond conducting and leading research, duties involve teaching courses in marketing for the MSc business and economics program, or other degree programs offered at Karlstad Business School at Karlstad University. Duties also include actively making independent or joint efforts with CTF colleagues to attract external funding.
In addition, the professor is expected to engage in external cooperation and partnerships as well as in the management of CTF and, if required, any other administrative duties at Karlstad University.
Qualification requirements
To be qualified for employment as a professor the applicant must have a doctor’s degree in Business Administration, Marketing or any other area of special relevance to the field, and demonstrated both research and teaching expertise in the discipline. This means that the applicant must have extensive research experience in the disciplinary field and/or have made other relevant research contributions to the discipline. In addition, sufficient experience of teaching in higher education is required.
For more information of qualification requirements, see Karlstad University’s regulations on appointments and the Higher Education Ordinance (HEO) Ch.4, sect. 3.
Assessment criteria
The assessment criteria for appointment as a professor shall be the degree of expertise required as a qualification for employment. As much attention shall be given to the assessment of teaching expertise as to the assessment of research expertise or artistic expertise. (HEO Ch. 4 sect. 3).
Research expertise is demonstrated through independent research in business administration with a marketing emphasis extensively published internationally, experience of leading and developing a research group, preferably in faculty research fields.
Teaching expertise is demonstrated through experience of different approaches to and methods of teaching at undergraduate/master levels and/or doctoral level, and completed course in higher education pedagogy and in supervision.
Qualifications in teaching expertise must be well documented.
In the ranking of candidates, special weight is given to research qualifications, in particular international journal publications of relevance to CTF’s research areas and to the position. Special weight is also given to teaching skills, success in attracting external funding, ability to lead research and to cooperate externally. As CTF needs to strengthen their expertise in the area of industrial marketing, experience of research in this field is a valuable qualification but not an absolute requirement for appointment. In addition, high levels of motivation and good ability to work independently and together with other researchers are valued qualities since research at CTF is usually pursued together with researchers across disciplines.
Terms of employment
The appointment is full-time, non-fixed term employment with starting date by agreement. Probationary period may be used.
